Nobody can shut out advertising. Everywhere in public surroundings and in the media, advertising tries to grab our - the consumer's attention. Commerce has penetrated so deeply into all nooks and crannies of public and private space that it seems as if we have walk-on parts in a world that has become one large sales empire. Designer Ji Lee has found a way to re-conquer urban space: bubbling. Blank balloon stickers are stuck on billboards and posters allowing passers-by to write their comments. These remarks are often hilarious, sometimes profound and they change advertising's one-way traffic into a real public dialogue. The Bubble project has been spread throughout numerous countries by enthusiastic bubblers and now also has an Internet version. Talk Back is a collection of the most remarkable bubbles to date, divided into appealing chapters such as Social Commentary, Media and fashion, Sex and Drugs, Politics and Religion, Art and Philosophy, Humour, Personal Messages and Bubble Art. The book includes sixteen balloon stickers for readers to continue the Balloon Project in their own town or city. Ji Lee is designer and freelance advertising consultant in New York and founder of the Bubble Project. Lee: More bubbles means more freedom, more exchange of personal thoughts, more reactions to current affairs and most importantly, more imagination and fun.
