Navigating around the internet and other digital media can be a daunting and confusing experience. We need the digital equivalent of maps, compasses and threads to find our way about and to remember where we have been. This work teaches the designer how to orient the user more efficiently - through, for example, the study of virtual settings where navigation is made easier due to predictable behaviour or where navigation is helped by interaction or association. The authors point to what have become de facto standards as well as suggesting new ones in the developing media. The implications for the content of the Internet if the majority of network devices become handheld is also discussed. This book aims to be of use to everyone involved in the planning and designing of websites as well as to students of design, computer science and marketing.
