Contrasts don't necessarily mean conflicts. The fashion designer Susanne Kümper recognised the creative potential residing in the tension between the Islamic and Western worlds and built up a Faculty of Fashion' at Helwan University in Cairo. Since 1999, together with her students, she has been working on imaginative creations that appeal to the Western taste, as well as fashion that takes Islamic veiling requirements into account. She points out that this is not a contradiction but an asset for her female students, who are often veiled themselves. The course of study provides graduates with the opportunity to step into the international fashion scene. The models are presented to the public on catwalks and at exhibitions. Furthermore, in the Design Workshop St. Katherine', Bedouin women from the Sinai make traditional embroidery for modern outfits, designed by students and lecturers in Cairo. This publication shows why outfits designed in the Arabic world are increasingly capturing the attention of the Western world. Impressive photo shoots, whether in Cairo or at the pyramids, show us the unusual creations against a breathtaking backdrop and allow us to immerse ourselves in the exotic'. The photographer Jörg Heieck shows us daily life in Cairo in a black and white photo gallery.
