What happens when art leaves such establishment haunts as museums and galleries to be shown in the space of everyday living? How does this change the appearance of a place? And what productive abrasion' arises? The art project VORFAHRT is dedicated to answering such questions in a broadbased experiment. Under the supervision of Wolfgang Seitz, who makes exhibitions happen, Birkenwaldstra e in Stuttgart one of the loveliest streets on the slopes of the city was transformed into a vast art zone' for seven weeks. One hundred artists were selected from Germany and abroad to show two hundred works, most of them developed expressly for VORFAHRT, on the private property of about one hundred and thirty participants, who live in Birkenwaldstra e. Their balconies, windows, front yards and garages thus became exciting places for encounters with cutting-edge positions in contemporary art. Unlike Jan Hoet's legendary Chambres d'amis' project in Ghent, which used private dwellings as branches' of a museum twenty years ago, VORFAHRT investigates the possibilities of present art in everyday living right at the interface between private and public space. An unusual book on an extraordinary art event: the exhibition project and all works shown are presented and discussed in a staggering array of illustrations and accompanying texts.
