London gallery owner Jariwala began the project documented in this volume in mid-1997, choosing neckties as the unifying element, the canvases on which international artists would realize their diverse visions. Seventy-seven artists, including Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, and Yayoi Kusama, created necktie mock-ups that were translated into textile format by Como, Italy's Ratti silk factory. The ties were sold in editions of 300, and an accompanying exhibition was held in London's Westzonegalleryspace. With full-color images, the book resembles an exhibition catalog. The author's introduction explains the project's premise and history, and several of the 77 works are accompanied by brief, albeit sometimes unrelated, artist statements. No further interpretive text is provided, and the cross-cultural artistic alliances that the project may have fostered, and that the book title seemingly alludes to, are never discussed. While the artists chosen represent a variety of nations, 40 percent of the participants hail from Great Britain. Recommended for collections seeking documentation of particular contemporary artists' projects.
