When women began working as photographers in thesecond half of the 19th century, the rules of the mediumhad not yet been codified and experimentation was theorder of the day. As early as the 1870s, Julia MargaretCameron was a pioneer of the use of soft focus in herdepictions of figures from Arthurian legend. Some womenopened their own studios, like Ellen Auerbach and GreteStern, who were innovative figures in the flourishing fieldof advertising. Others were obliged to work anonymouslyor under pseudonyms. As the 20th century dawned, women embraced genres ranging from documentaryrealism to surrealist photomanipulation, fearlesslyexploring the boundaries of photographic possibility.
