In his new book, celebrated artist photographer and winner of the 2000 Turner Prize, Wolfgang Tillmans, samples and mixes images on the pages and achieves a new level exploring the visible world. "Manual" presents his entire new work and compiled archival material of the last five years of his artistic development. It is the most comprehensive book Wolfgang Tillmans has ever created. The title Manual refers to "handmade" images, material displayed on his tables he calls "Truth Study Center". In this installation Tillmans' reveals his passion for substance over form as well as his guiding moral principles: His remarkable installation shows tables on which his photographs are interspersed with newspaper articles, opinion columns and texts he has written to present his stances on political and social issues. The articles and texts comment on the complexities of the self-described "creative liberal's" response to the contemporary culture wars between left and right. Also included in the book is an extensive selection of striking new abstract works, which through their vivid colour and compositions evoke bodily as well as atmospheric sensations. "Manual" be understood as a "guide" to Tilmans' work, as a composition in which the artist shows his own understanding of his work in a very personal approach. For him the installation of his work is as important as the work itself: He sees his book as a new, most comprehensive installation. The installation material is presented in 410 full-page illustrations and 20 double spreads, all in full colour - the densest and most intensive presentation of Wolfgang Tillmans' oeuvre ever published.
