During their 40-year career, Bernd and Hilla Becher created theirown architectural typology as they photographed buildingsin a unique style. Basic Forms represents the culmination oftheir career. Although the subject matter is unglamorous mineshafts, blast furnaces, cooling towers, water towers, silos, andgas tanks the Bechers' passion for their work imbues thesephotographs with beauty and solemnity. The Bechers restrictedthe conditions of each photograph taking them early in themorning, on overcast days, so as to eliminate shadow anddistribute light evenly. Each image is centered and frontallyframed, its parallel lines set on an even plane. There are nohuman figures, nor are there birds in the sky. The result is atreasury of precisely functional architectural forms, a sublimeexample of conceptual artistic practices, and a series of perfectsculptures of a bygone industrial age.
