Hockney painted these works over the last year from July 2005. The paintings span the four seasons through the scorched landscape of summer, the autumn mists, frozen winter scenes and the blossoming of spring. They were painted in East Yorkshire, outside in the countryside he knows and loves so well. By painting the works outside Hockney has captured the essence of nature in all its vivid tones and characteristic forms. The paintings change our way of seeing the countryside, drawing attention to its colors, shapes and textures. The brushstrokes seem exact and considered and yet are typically economic and spontaneous. The immediacy and impact of the works highlight the power of David Hockney's painting. The shadows and horizons are pronounced and the field of vision wider and deeper than any camera could achieve.
